In the summer time, there is a field just opposite with the most incredible poppies. You'll first climb up the big hill out of the village towards the golf course and then you'll loop back down though more lovely open countryside towards Dane End. If you choose to cycle this route with children, Id recommend doing it from Welwyn to Hertford as its slightly downhill and you can really whizz along it the journey in reverse might be more of a struggle for little cyclists. The extra distance however, takes you on a long walk along the Back Lane Roman track and then loops around on the Chain walk route back towards Cottered. We love Hartham Common in Hertford. Stapleford2.25 milesWe don't normally feature linear 'there-and-back' routes, but this is such a pleasant little stroll that we thought it was a worthy walk to enjoy in both directions. Buggy-friendly walks around Surrey. The walk starts in Hartham Common and follows the River Lea (or Lee). The walking options range from a short 0.3-mile discovery trail to a 4-mile walk. This little village between Hertford and Stevenage offers various walks taking in stretches of new woodland and pathways along the River Beane. 9. Our children love playing next to the River Mimram a chalk stream which runs through the park. You have to cross the busy and fast A10 road at one point, so please take great care here, and there are a number of pubs on the route to enjoy as you get back into Buntingford. This route however adds some extra distance, and definitely some extra exercise, by taking you up and over the steep peaks of Warden Hill and Galley Hill about half way around the walk. The first half of the walk is primarily through open countryside and along the Chiltern Way footpath, until you reach the village of Belsize with it's lovely pub for a half way pitstop. Most of the paths are well maintained which means they are wheelchair accessible. Its a popular place to walk where you can enjoy woodland paths, play areas and a relaxing stroll along the canal. There are over 130 car parks throughout the forest and each one has a gateway into the wider forest. Length: 4.6 mi Est. There's a fair amount of climbing involved as half way around the walk you will descend down into the River Gade valley to visit the village of Great Gaddesden and stroll alongside the river. The extension first takes you on an adventure through lovely open Hertfordshire countryside with great views before strolling you along a pretty stretch of the Grand Union Canal. It heads out west from Lilley, climbing Wardswood Lane and then the John Bunyan Trail before joining the Chiltern way to loop back to the start via Whitehill Farm and Lilleypark Wood. It's a great one for the kids as you'll first go on a little adventure up into the woodlands surrounding the reserve, before then descending down into the open heathland where you'll visit a large sculpture of what they will believe is a 'real Dinosaur' egg. There are a couple of rewarding pubs in neighbouring Datchworth which can be reached along the woodland paths. The good news is, you're not alone - and while many groups can't meet indoors at the moment, buggy walking is safe and free and can start from your doorstep. When our children were little, we used to just visit the woods next to the car park great for den building, bluebells and blackberry picking.
